“Something for the Year” Project

Something for the Year #4

‘Something for the Year #4′ is the fourth and final record taken from my Song a Week project, which I started by in early 2010. Although it’s been difficult some weeks, it’s been important for me to keep being creative as although inspiration can’t be manifested on the spot, I certainty think that taking the time to allow ideas to form and just being honest in the song writing process you will always find an acorn or spark to ignite an idea. You might not be recording Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony but I guess you will always be blessed with something just as important.

Sometimes the tracks aren’t always captured in the most pristine way, as the best part of the recent releases it has just been me with an old 8 track, but I think there is something truly special about capturing the first incarnation of an idea brought to life.

Something for the Year #3

‘Something for the Year #3′ is the third of the proposed four records taken from the Song a Week project in which I’ve written and recorded a track each week for an entire year. I guess I’d describe the album as “self produced bordering on a mix of gentle folk and lo-fi pop in a wash of electrical reverb” or just “acoustic indie” if that helps cut to the chase.

Something for the Year #2

Not surprisingly this is the second album taken from the Song a Week project I started in April 2010. Yes, a song a week has all been done before but I’m having such a blast writing and recording at the moment that none of that matters. I can say with a hand on my heart that these are the most rewarding sessions I have ever been involved in. Although, as I’m sure you can tell, I am no sound engineer but when you capture a song for the first time there is something just so magical about it which I never seem to be able to recreate no matter how good my performance is. This is why I’m choosing not to wait for a big studio to open it’s doors to a boy and his guitar. I’m quite content (certainly not the enemy of invention in my book) with my 8-track and a cup of tea.

Something for the Year #1

On 7th April 2010 I started work on a project, which I must say I’m not the first to attempt and certainly not the last, where I will begin writing and recording a song a week for a whole year (a first for me) and then release these tracks periodically through a serious of albums. This decision was taken as the record label I used to run folded and I just wanted to get back to the enjoyment of songwriting for no one else but myself. My songs aren’t going to change the world nor be the cure for cancer but they mean something to me and I guess that’s what matters.
